5. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q:
How do I sent mail to the list?
A:
Send email to wh40k@wh40k.net. It will then be mailed to everyone subscribed to the list, including yourself. One of the nice features of the list is that it uses mail filtering software that will automagically throw away any posts from people not on the list, so don't bother sending random stuff from this mail link. It also defends the list from spam, binary attachments, large mails that are too large, mail that is encoded, as well as mail without subjects, digest subjects, and it even attempts to divert administrative requests.
Q:
What does the abbreviation/acronym ... mean?
A:
See section '9. Acronyms'
Q:
Where does the list come from?
A:
The list was run by Joseph Goodman of Dark Library fame. Subsequently it was run by John Phelps, who ran it from 'fenris.austin.apple.com'. When John was running into problems maintaining it, . Edwin Voskamp and Chris Bickford took over the mailing list, from kn.com, on an RS/6000 from the company they worked at. After some time, kn.com ceased to exist, shortly before the company, and Edwin purchased an account with igcom.net and the list runs from there.
Q:
What does the list run on?
A:
The list is hosted at a professional mailing list provider that runs a combination of software, including some proprietary software, under UNIX. The mailing list Web management interface used is MailMan.
Q:
Can we vote to change the list rules?
A:
The list is not a democracy. If you want to run your own list, we will be happy to help you set it up as best we can. We'll also listen to any suggestions and implement any that make the list a better place.
Q:
What about the First Amendment?
A:
We are not the government, and the right to free speech does not imply guaranteed transmission of said speech.
Q:
How do I get in on this list maintainer scam?
A:
So, you say you want to maintain a mailing list. You want to send out those mails with the subject of 'Your posting to the 40k-list' and strike terror into the hearts of people who fail to follow the guidelines you set. What do you have to do?
  • Learn a lot of UNIX. Edwin has compiled both procmail and SmartList to run the 40k-list.
  • Have some spare change around. Edwin currently pays $1,200 a year for an account to run the list from.
  • Have a lot of spare time . Edwin currently spends about an hour a day doing administrivia (checking logs, resubscribing people, etcera), and it takes a lot of time to read all of the messages posted to the list. In short, it's not that much fun, but it helps keep the list content worthwhile.
Q:
Are you on some kind of power trip?
A:
Not really. We'd prefer not to send out messages like this one, but we're not going to let list content go the way of rec.games.miniatures.warhammer.
Site Update Aug 26, 2004
Due to too much spam to non-existing accounts on this domain, I moved the WH40K content to its own site, so I can better filter email.
